Designing Souvenirs from Architectural Styles and Valuable Buildings around Rattanakosin Island

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1.) to design 3 sets of two-dimensional graphic line of valuable buildings around Rattanakosin Island and 2.) to design a prototype of 3D from the graphic line as souvenirs, such as fridge magnets, keys chain, mobile hanging and etc. The conceptual framework consisted of: 1.) to study and collect architectural information of valuable building around Rattanakosin Island, 2.) to produce the souvenirs, architecture valuable buildings around Rattanakosin Island, 3.) to design souvenirs which concern to architecture, valuable building around Rattanakosin Island and 4.) to design logo, package, marketing and branding for promotion.


The research results were found that the two dimensional graphic line design which was divided into groups according to the characteristics of the building composed of: 1.) 8 types of buildings in Nang Loeng district 2.) 8 types in Charoenkrung 3.) 5 types in Tha Tian and 4.) 5 types of wooden house and street corner building group. And the prototype of 3D work piece which designed from graphic line as souvenirs including: 1.) postcard and decal attached that used graphic maps and graphics of the designed building, 2.) two-colored porcelain coffee mugs 3.) wooden keychain with laser beam cutting and acrylic painted and 4.) fridge magnets made of colored glazed clay. The comparison of mass production comprised of: 1.) prototype making by molding 3D models in a computer program and 3D printing (3D Print) 2.) mold making divided into material: Resin (casting in mold), terracotta or glazed clay (pressed clay into the mold) and epoxy (pressed into the mold) and 3.) beam cutting (laser cutting). In terms of process and production techniques in mass production including: the cost, coloring, and the beauty details, the study could not clarify the conclusion of the best method or the best material, because it depends on factors and choices that appropriate to patterns and objectives. This study has just provided the information for decision making.
