ANIMATION INSTALLATION: SENSING THINGS IN THE ANTHROPOCENE
Keywords:
Art Installation, Animation, The AnthropoceneAbstract
This research article in visual arts aims to seek ways to create animation installation using the Anthropocene as a theoretical framework. This article emphasizes the process of study leading to a concept of the practical work regarding the following procedures: 1) studying the concept of the Anthropocene, 2) creating the research framework through the lens of de-anthropocentrism and concept of rhizome, 3) textual analysis of 6 pieces of related artworks, 4) experimenting on 2 pieces of artworks, following approaches from the analysis, and 5) concluding the animation installation approaches. From the study, ways for creating animation installation are as follows: 1) emphasize non-human subjects, 2) create linkage – connections of content on the basis of differences to show interactions between humans and things which addresses a non-linear network that provides infinite linkage, 3) use fragmentation to reveal diverse interactions, and 4) employ repetition that brings change for animation piece each time it loops. The creative approach emphasizes the idea of de-anthropocentrism. The interaction of fragments altogether on the screen for the duration creates dialogues among each other. The researcher's work therefore differs from the traditional film format. These features can be used as an alternative way for animation installation.
