BALLADES FROM THAI LITERATURE FOR PIANO SOLO

The music composition and performance project Ballades from Thai Literature for Piano Solo focused on the role of performer in the field of performing arts. The researcher would like to study and perform piano compositions that reflected the cultural root of Thailand. Therefore, the researcher invited four distinguished Thai contemporary composers to write piano works that showed a strong relationship with Thai culture and literature. Four composers participated in this project and their compositions were as follows:
Professor Dr. Narongrit Dhamabutra’s Three Perspectives of I-Nao reflected his affinity for Javanese culture. Assistant Professor Dr. Denny Euprasert’s Phra Abhai Mani utilized a strong Jazz idiom. Associate Professor Dr. Wiboon Trakulhun’s Ramayana expressed his ideas through the sound of thunder and storm and used a well-designed formal structure. Associate Professor Dr. Saksri Vongtaradon’s Matanaphata was a virtuosic piano work that expressed a very intense human state of mind.
This research project was successfully presented at several leading institutions in Thailand and abroad, such as Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, College of Music, Mahidol University, Chulalongkorn University, and UCSI University, Malaysia. The project was featured in Matichon newspaper, Bangkok Business newspaper, CU radio, and Thai PBS.
