Durian Production Management Substitute for Field Crops by Farmers at Khlong Muang Sub-district, Pak Chong District, Nakhonratchasima Province

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study 1) the factors affecting the decision making
of farmers to replace their field corps with durian production 2) the management of durian
production 3) the enhancing factors and obstacle factors in durian production. This was a qualitative
research which included in-depth interview of key informants, who successfully in replacing their
field crops with durian production, in 3 orchards in Khlong Muang Sub-district, Pak Chong District,
Nakhonratchasima Province. Research tools, also included observation and in-depth interview.
An inductive analysis was used to analyze qualitative data.
The results indicated that 1) the factors affecting the decision making of farmers to replace
their field corps with durian production were : the selling price of field crops were pretty much
lower than the production cost, their land was suitable for durian plantation, farmers were able
to set price by themselves and their farms were easily accessible. 2) Both principles of durian
production and experiences from cultivating other fruit trees were able to use for cultivating
durian, as well as by using knowledge from texts, documents, media and also visiting successful
farms. 3) Enhancing factors were the selling price of durian was higher than those of field crops.
Farmers already had agricultural tools and suitable equipment therefore there was no need to
invest more. They also had enough budget and market support. While obstacle factor was the
difference of durian production from field crops production that forced the farmers to seek more
knowledge. 4) These research results can be used as academics information and beneficial for government agency to promote and transfer knowledge to farmers and their communities
