CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES OF IMPLEMENTING EMI IN THAI HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract
This article presented an analysis of the use of English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) in Thai higher education, focusing on the challenges and opportunities arising from its implementation. The article discussed the importance of EMI in the context of globalization and the development of educational quality, while presenting the current situation of English usage in Thailand, which was found to be lower than other countries in the region. It analyzed key challenges in implementing EMI, including the lack of clear policies, readiness of faculty and students, and curriculum adaptation. At the same time, the article highlighted emerging opportunities such as increasing international competitiveness and promoting academic exchange. The article suggested approaches for effective development and promotion of EMI, emphasizing the importance of establishing clear policies, developing staff potential, and preparing students. It proposed integrating EMI as part of a national education development strategy, taking into account the balance between Thai cultural identity and internationalization. Additionally, it recommended further research on the long-term effects of EMI implementation in the Thai context.
