THE DEVELOPMENT OF READING COMPREHENSION SKILL BY BRAILLE STORY BOOKS FOR VISUAL IMPAIRMENT STUDENTS

Abstract

The study aimed to 1) study efficiency of braille story books to practice reading comprehension skills for visual impairment students which was qualified with the 80/80 efficiency index, and 2) compare the reading comprehension scores before and after study using braille story books. The study employed the one group pretest-posttest design. The sample group was selected by the purposive sampling method containing 10 impairment students who studied in elementary school for the first semester of the academic year of 2022 from the Bangkok School for the Blind. Research data were collected using 1) Braille storybooks, 2) research tools’ quality assessment forms, 3) reading comprehension skills assessment form, 4) lesson plans to practice reading comprehension skills for students with visual impairments, 5) evaluation of the use of Braille storybook media to practice comprehension skills for visually impaired students from key stakeholders. Data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and percentage.


The result found that 1) the efficiency index of the reading comprehension skill using braille story books for visual impairment students was 86.66/82.22, and 2) the mean scores of the visual impairment students before and after studying with braille story books were 7.90 and 11.90 respectively. Therefore, the mean score after studying with the braille story was significantly higher than before studying with this method at the statistically significant level of 0.05.
