EXPOSITION, IMPRESSION TECHNIQUE, MOOD AND TONE PERCEPTION OF MOVIE AUDIENCE VIA BLAKE SNYDER’S SAVE THE CAT CONCEPT: A CASE STUDY OF HOLLYWOOD AND ASIAN CINEMA

Abstract

Introduction: The Save the Cat storytelling approach in filmmaking is a story structure developed by screenwriter Blake Snyder that transforms an ordinary narrative into an engaging one by arranging key moments in a specific sequence, effectively capturing and holding the audience’s attention. Objective:         1) Analyze the opening strategies based on the Save The Cat concept of Hollywood and Asian films, and   2) Analyze the audience's perception of Mood and Tone towards the opening of the story based on the Save The Cat concept in Hollywood and Asian films. Method: Qualitative research was used to select              4 films as a specific sample, using the criteria of revenue success and awards from 2008-2023. Content data was analyzed in the opening section and the audience's perception of mood and tone participating in the focus group using the Save The Cat approach. Results: of the research found that the storytelling in the opening section that is consistent with the perception of mood and tone mostly emphasized the feeling of perception of Mood and Tone within the film that has been since the opening and opened with the first image that is interesting, leaving some puzzles or issues for the audience to feel curious and want to follow up. It uses the film family and the theme of the film in telling the story. The connection of emotional feelings, mood and tone perception are other variables included in the storytelling structure in the opening section based on the Save The Cat concept, which comes from the emotions and attitudes of the characters. Creating a Genre and Theme are also parts that help create mood and tone. There is a clear transmission of emotions and feelings directly to the audience as well. Conclusion: the storytelling in the opening part according to the concept of Save The Cat is consistent with the perception of mood and tone, making the audience feel like they are in the world of the film and want to follow the film from the beginning to the end.
