THE STUDY OF MUSIC IN BAPTISM OF WAT PHRA HARUTHAI KHLUNG DISTRICT CHANTHABURI PROVINCE

Abstract

The purposes of this study were: 1) to study the foundations of the inheritance process play music during the baptismal ceremony and 2) to analyze the structure and form of songs in the baptismal ceremony of Wat Phra Haruthai Khlung District, Chanthaburi Province. The study was a qualitative research methods. Data Collected by interviews and observes from three priests of Wat Phra Haruthai Khlung District, Chanthaburi Province, five musicians and singers and three experts in song analysis.

            The results of the research found:

            1) Wat Phra Haruthai Khlung District, Chanthaburi Province occurs from the migration of Vietnamese and Chanthaboon a lot of people who gradually moved into Wan Yao Subdistrict, Khlung District, Chanthaburi Province. Church was built expanding culture and beliefs until the present day. Forms of ritual and musical culture have been passed down from generation to generation by learning biblical teachings of the Bible, studying international music theory note-taking and oral transmission. The song used in the baptism ceremony consists of 3 songs, including Bot Prom Nam Sek , Prom Nam Sek and Chern Phra Jit. Each songs have meaning, the symbol of the ritual is water and the Invitation of the Holy Spirit.

            2) Analyze the structure of the three baptismal songs, total 10 points. First, Song of Bot Prom Nam Sek. It has characterized by the use of interval that are different from other songs, including M6^th, min6^th, and P8^th. It has a wide sound range as the octaves P12^th. Use simple time of  and don’t has rhyme between the lines of the song. Second, Song of Prom Nam Sek. It has characterized by the song use simple time of   . The key of D Major. And rhyme between paragraphs in some parts of the song. Third, Song of Chern Phra Jit. It uses an octave that is different from other songs, including min2^nd and P4^th. It is a song that uses a normal rhythm of   and 8 verses. The overall lyrics consist of Two-Line Forms, and 9 words per paragraph. There is a similarity in using double steps, including P1^st, M2^nd, M3^rd, min3^rd. There is a wide sound range in double steps, with melodic movement in steps mixed, including M9^th and M12^th. Repetition of sounds, and the chord progression follows the diatonic chords of the major scale. Each chord ending in a song has a complete break. Forms use a three-part song, it consists of part 1 (A), part 2 (B), part 3 (A' or C).
