THE NEEDS ASSESSMENT FOR COMPETENCY DEVELOPMENT IN THE 21ST CENTURY OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHERS UNDER KRABI PRIMARY EDUCATIONAL SERVICES AREA OFFICE

Abstract

This research aimed 1) to assess the competency development needs in the 21st century of physical education (PE) teachers and 2) to compare the competency development needs in the 21^st century of PE teachers. The samples of this research were 87 PE teachers teaching in primary schools under Krabi Primary Educational Service Area Office (Krabi PEASO). The research instrument was a teacher competency evaluation form. Priority needs index  PNI_modified  was employed for data analysis.

Findings revealed that: the level of expected competencies in the 21^st century, overall, of PE teachers under Krabi PEASO was at the highest level, whereas the level of actual competencies was at a high level. The overall priority needs index  PNI_Modified  was 0.24. The competencies with the highest levels of needs were computer and technology, and media literacy PNI_Modified = 0.34 The comparisons classified by competencies were: 1) the competency development needs of female PE teachers were higher than male PE teachers, 2) the competency development needs of PE teachers, aged under 30 and between 41-50, were higher than those between 30-40 and 50-60, 3) the competency development needs of PE teachers with a bachelor's degree were higher than those with a master's degree, and 4) the competency development needs of PE teachers with work experience lower than 1 year were ranked the highest.
