Framing for social movement in The sphere of Thai’s Y-series, 2020-2022

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze the framing of social movements in the sphere of Thai’s Y-series (Yaoi series) from the year of 2020 – 2022. The textual and discourse analysis were methodologically applied. The textual analysis focused on the narratives of 7 Y- series  braoadcasting during the year of 2020 – 2022. The discourse analysis from Y-sereis sphere was conducted thorugh 19 pieces of directors and actors’ interviews on the media and 2 Youtube reaction video channels for Y-series. The study resulted that the narratives of Y-series played a crucial role of framing the social movements in 2 relevant aspects; gender identity - emphasizing on homosexual men identity and power networks beneficial to exploitation in socieities. Besides, the role of Y-series as entertaining media helped the frame extension in frame alignment process which was a tool for connecting audiences who didn’t encounter MSM identity problem. The Y-series also encouraged audiences who hadn’t figured out improtance of homosexual men related social movements to eagerly engage in the movement. The sphere of Y-series which comprised actors, directors then Y-series YouTube reaction video channels played crucial roles for building credibility of gender identity and power network – related frames.
