Abstract
This article analyzed functional relationships of language units in news headlines about cruise ships during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were collected from news headlines about cruise ships during the COVID-19 pandemic with the words “cruise ships” and “COVID-19” as keywords using Google to search online. The data were collected from 32 news headlines appearing from February 1, 2020 to March 30, 2020. The results of the analysis revealed that the most often found, 81.26% of language units were noun phrases functioning as the subjects of the sentences or the doers of the actions, followed by verbal phrases functioning as predicates at 12.5%. The least often found, 3.12% of language unit was a quantifying phrase functioning as a quantifier indicating a quantity. This frequency of 3.12% is the same as that of a clause found to modify a verb phrase and was part of the verb phrase in a complex sentence.
