การเล่นแบบลูสพาร์ทส์ถูกเสนอขึ้นโดยสถาปนิกนาม Simon Nicholson ในช่วงยุค 1970s ซึ่งประกอบด้วยข้อเสนออันเป็นอุดมคติ 4 ประการ คือ 1) ให้ความสำคัญสูงสุดในที่ซึ่งมีเด็ก 2)เปิดให้เด็กเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกระบวนการ 3) ใช้แนวทางข้ามศาสตร์ และ 4) จัดตั้งศูนย์ข้อมูลข่าวสาร โดยอุปกรณ์ที่ใช้ในการเล่นนั้นสามารถเป็นวัสดุแบบใดก็ได้ที่สามารถเคลื่อนย้ายได้ ก่อนหน้านี้การเล่นประเภทนี้ยังไม่ได้รับความสนใจจากแวดวงการศึกษาปฐมวัยนัก กระทั่งเข้าสู่ศตวรรษที่ 21
