The Study of Problems and Needs to Enhance Undergraduates’ Chinese Speaking Ability

Abstract

The research aimed 1) to study the basic information and the problems of undergraduate students on basic Chinese speaking abilities, 2) to study the needs of instructors and students to improve their Chinese speaking abilities. The population scope in this research was separated into 2 groups including teachers teaching Chinese in higher education institutes and undergraduate students either studying Chinese major or Chinese teaching major. The population used in the research was chosen by purposive sampling, the instructors’ interview form and student’s questionnaire survey were used as research tools. The data is analyzed by percentage, means, standard deviation and content analysis.


According to the research, the results shown that 1) Most of the students have started studying Chinese since high school. Most of them are not Chinese and rarely use Chinese language communicating with their families. The reasons the students chose to study Chinese were the importance of Chinese in present day and for their future careers, some of them hope to be the teachers in the institutions. In term of the Students’ Chinese Speaking abilities, the Chinese speaking problems encountered by instructors and students were: 1) incorrect pronunciation and accent of some Chinese vowels and consonants, such as “zh ch sh z c s ü üe”. 2) The problem of insufficient vocabulary used in communication. 3) The problem of word order in Chinese sentences according to Thai grammar. 4) The length of time the students spent to arrange Chinese sentences is quite long.


2) In term of the needs of instructors and students, the instructors and students agreed that the teaching model should be created to strengthen the students’ Chinese speaking abilities. The model should encourage students to constantly practice speaking Chinese through various activities. Also, the teaching methods and assessment methods should be varied, increase teaching time, contents topic in teaching material should be up-to-dated, related to students’ daily life, and Chinese cultural basic knowledges should also be provided in teaching material.
