USING STORYTELLING ACTIVITIES TO ENHANCE THE ENGLISH LISTENING ABILITY OF GRADE 6 STUDENTS

Abstract

          This research aimed to study: 1) the English listening ability of students who had participated in English storytelling activities; and 2) the attitude of students towards the storytelling activities which were designed to enhance their English listening ability. The research population was 17 grade 6 students at Wat Chonglap (Choklarp Pracha Pattana) School in the second semester of the academic year 2018. The research instruments constructed by the researcher were: 1) 7 storytelling activity lesson plans; 2) pre- and post-listening ability tests; 3) a questionnaire of students’ attitude towards the storytelling activities; 4) an interview form for students’ opinion on the storytelling activities, and 5) an observation form for the students’ behavior while participating in the activities. The data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and inductive data analysis.


          The findings of this research were:


  1. The students’ English listening ability after learning through the storytelling activities was higher than that of before learning at the percentage of 55.

  2. Overall, the students’ attitude towards learning through the storytelling activities was at the highest level.

          The interview and observation revealed that the students liked and enjoyed the storytelling activities. They also believed that these activities were helpful listening practices.
