This article traces interaction and reciprocity between istoria, or history as a literary form, and art historical traditions in late republic and early empire periods. This article argues that sequential narrative art which represents contemporary events or events in recent past was inclined towards being objective reports influenced by istoria. In classical world, istoria and visual arts portraying recent events developed almost independently. But during this particular period in Roman history where political culture became more opened, some forms of visual arts tended towards the ideas and modes of representation associated with objective, detailed and continuous view of events. This article studies triumphal paintings described in contemporary writing and Trajan’s Column.
