Abstract

This article aims to present ways to achieve holistic well-being according to Buddhist teaching in four aspects. Firstly, physical well-being – taking care of one’s physical health, consuming the four basic necessities according to need, not greed, and conducting oneself in ways that bring about happiness to both oneself and others according to moral principles. Secondly, psychological well-being – developing one’s mind to reach the stage of serenity, stability, purity, and wisdom in order to create basic to ultimate happiness in one’s life. Thirdly, social well-being – the cultivation of one’s society into a hospitable place without life-threatening harms and vices according to the Five Precepts and the Five Dhamma, a society in which every member has sufficient means for living. Lastly, environmental well-being – encouraging one to strive for a balanced environment in order to achieve a well-being in life that is conducive to enlightenment.
