Abstract

This research finds that that the truths of the physical world or nature in the theory of relativity and the quantum theory share many common features with those in the Buddhist doctrines. Although there are some minor differences in details, as well as some apparent inconsistencies, these do not lead to any serious contradictions. For example, the relativity of phenomena in the theory of relativity is in line with the theory of paticcasamuppada (dependent origination); the relativity of space-time in the theory of relativity denotes a dependence on its frame of reference very similar to the notion of space and time in the Buddhist doctrines. Owing to their similarities, the truths of modern physics and Buddhism have been and can be taken to support each other. For example, the truths of particles and energy, including their change, can lend support to aniccavada (the doctrine of impermanence) and khanikavada (the doctrine of momentariness), and the truths of sunnata or emptiness and the indescribability by language and logic of reality in the ultimate truth in Buddhism can be used to support similar truths in the quantum theory.
