Abstract

This research aims to (1) explore the rehabilitation processes for drug addicts in a model community, (2) derive lessons learned from the model community in drug addiction rehabilitation, and (3) examine pathways for developing drug rehabilitation processes in Ban Pak Dan, Thap Put District, Phang Nga province. The study employs in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and community forums through focus group discussions. Findings 1) Rehabilitation Process: The community of Ban Pak Dan adopts a “Community-Based Treatment” approach by integrating religion, culture, and social capital—such as health volunteers (Aor Sor Mor), local leaders, and youth—through religious activities, vocational training, and behavioral follow-up. This integration results in a continuous rehabilitation process that aligns with the local way of life. 2) Lesson Learned from the Model Community: The community's success stems from an internal understanding of the problem and the establishment of an effective surveillance system utilizing kinship networks, health volunteers, and monks, along with supportive roles from government agencies. This mechanism functions as a social alert system, reduces stigma, and creates an environment conducive to behavioral change. 3) Development Guidelines: Although the existing system is strong, there is room for improvement through the establishment of a Community Drug Coordination Center, enhanced training for local leaders in community psychology and counseling, and economic support via occupational groups for rehabilitated individuals. Additionally, promoting public understanding through community dialogues and social campaigns such as “Returning Good People to Society” can help reduce stigma and facilitate reintegration.
