Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to: (1) examine the socioeconomic characteristics of farmers in Mueang Chiang Rai District, Chiang Rai Province; and (2) investigate the factors influencing farmers’ decisions to cultivate pineapple. A quantitative research approach was employed, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The sample consisted of 400 farmers, including both pineapple growers and non-growers, selected using convenience sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, Independent Samples t-tests, and logistic regression analysis. The results of the study on the socioeconomic characteristics of farmers indicated that both pineapple growers and non-growers were predominantly male and had completed primary education. Pineapple growers had an average household size of 4.12 members, an average cultivation experience of 9.20 years, and an average cultivated area of 10.53 rai, with most marketing their produce through middlemen. In contrast, non-growers had an average household size of 3.44 members, primarily cultivated rice, and had an average cultivated area of 9.44 rai. Most farmers in both groups owned their land, possessed legal land ownership documents, were not members of any groups, and had not participated in training programs related to pineapple cultivation. Regarding the factors influencing farmers’ decisions to cultivate pineapple, the findings revealed that gender, age, household size, socioeconomic factors, production technique factors, production technology and innovation factors, and government support factors were significant determinants. Specifically, gender, age, and government support factors negatively influenced farmers’ decisions to cultivate pineapple, whereas the remaining factors had positive effects. Conversely, cultivated area, marketing factors, and production support factors did not significantly affect farmers’ decisions to cultivate pineapple.
