Abstract

This research focuses on career development for the foremen of high-rise building construction. The objectives were to: 1) study the competencies of construction foremen in high-rise buildings; and 2) propose guidelines for developing a competency-based curriculum. The research was divided into three phases, as follows: Phase 1 involved performance analysis by studying concepts from theory and various research results on construction foreman competencies and conducting interviews with foremen who had at least 20 years of experience in high-rise buildings. Phase 2 studied the competencies using the Delphi technique and random sampling through a questionnaire. The statistics used in this phase were the median and interquartile range. In Phase 3, a competency-based curriculum development approach was employed, utilizing group discussions with seven randomly selected experts, followed by content analysis.

The results of the research revealed that construction foremen in high-rise buildings demonstrated 22 competencies in knowledge, 38 in skills, and 14 in characteristics. Based on the focus group meeting with experts, the curriculum development for construction foreman competencies in the high-rise construction industry comprised three modules: 1) management and planning of high-rise construction supervision; 2) construction techniques of high-rise construction; and 3) safety and occupational health of high-rise construction. These modules constitute a short course aimed at developing the careers of construction foremen in the high-rise construction industry.
