The Guidelines on Fostering Thai-English

Abstract
The better younger children learn English, the more proficient they can be, whenever they have parents who are determined to succeed with their bilingual (English-Thai) children. Many theorists and linguists emphasize the importance of starting language learning at a young age. The author aims to present the Guidelines on Fostering Thai-English Bilingual Children by Parents and Teachers. Therefore, the parents need to select the correct teaching methodology that is appropriate for their children’s circumstances and have a good road map for their bilingual education. There are five teaching methodologies for parents: 1) One Parent, One Language (OPOL) 2) Tailor-made 3) Minority Language at Home (MLAH) 4) Mixed Language Policy (MLP) and 5) Immersion Program or Personal Tutor. Additionally, the school teachers can get a chance to succeed with their bilingual (English-Thai) children when they are in preschool. The school teachers must select the teaching methods that are appropriate for the children in the 21st century in Thailand. The teaching methods of school teachers should emphasize communication, everyday listening, speaking, reading, and writing in sequence. Furthermore, it should highlight learning management and classroom management. The role of teachers is less than that of planners, facilitators, and consultants to motivate and support the children’s self-learning. As mentioned above, the focus of the second language learning of earlier childhood is that parents and teachers need to make the best plan for fostering Thai-English bilingual children.
