เครื่องหนังไทยจำแนกออกเป็นประเภทหน้ากลองแข็งตึงจัด แข็งตึงปานกลาง นิ่มตึงปานกลางและนิ่มหย่อน  ปัญหาที่พบเสมอกับกลองทุกประเภทคือการยืดตัวของหนังหน้ากลอง หนังชักและหนังไส้ละมาน การแก้ไขทำได้ด้วยการสาวกลองให้หน้าตึง การสาวกลองไม่ควรทำให้หน้ากลองเบี้ยว หากหน้ากลองรั่วหรือปริแต่ซ่อมแซมได้ ให้ใช้กาวร้อนหยอดแล้วนำหนังแพะหรือหนังงูเหลือมบางแปะทับบริเวณนั้น กรณีหน้ากลองเบี้ยวให้คลายหนังชักลงแล้วตั้งทิศทางหน้ากลองใหม่ เวลาสาวกลองได้ดีที่สุดคือช่วงน้ำค้างตกหรือช่วงเช้ามืดเนื่องจากความชื้นในอากาศมีมากทำให้ความชื้นซึมเข้าหน้ากลองได้ดีลดปัญหาหนังกรอบไม่ยืดตัว
ไม่ควรสาวกลองเวลาแดดจัดเพราะอากาศที่ร้อนมากอาจทำให้หนังปริหรือฉีกขาดง่าย หากหน้ากลองเปียกน้ำควรแก้ไขทันทีด้วยการนำพัดลมเป่าหน้ากลองหรือใช้เครื่องเป่าความร้อนทำให้แห้ง ไม่ควรนำไปผึ่งแดด การยืดอายุใช้งานหน้ากลองทำได้ด้วยการนำรักผสมน้ำมันก๊าดทาบาง ๆ บริเวณกลางหน้ากลองหรือเคลือบเงาผิวชั้นนอก วัสดุตกแต่งเสียงกลองหรือข้าวติดหน้ากลองนิยมนำขี้เถ้ามะพร้าวผสมข้าวสุกบดติดหน้ากลองเพื่อให้ได้เสียงกลองที่ไพเราะ ปัจจุบันนิยมใช้กล้วยตากบดหรือกาววิทยาศาสตร์

Abstract

          Thai drums is classified into three categories: tightly stretched, moderately stretched, and loosely stretched.  In general, the problem of overly stretched drum head and thongs is most common found.  The solution is to re-string thongs with great attention to prevent the damage of head formation.  It should remain a circle.  If there is a leakage of drum head, hot glue is applied and sealed with either goat or python hide.  In order to fix the deformed drum head, untighten thongs and re-string them.  The most appropriate time to re-string is at during the time of either sunrise or sunset because humidity in the air is best absorbed by the drum head.  Restring drum heads should be executed at noon because the heat can damage and break drum heads.  If drums are soaked wet, they should be dried immediately by a heating fan.  Drums must be exposed to sunlight.  In order to extend the life of drums, drum heads should be applied with rak liquid (lacquer vanish) and gad oil.  Drum heads are tuned by applying a mixture of mashed cooked rice and ashes together.  Synthetic materials and dried banana crush can be substituted traditional mixture.
