BEETHOVEN’S LAST 5 PIANO SONATAS: CHARACTERISTIC AND INFLUENCE ON LATER PIANO LITERATURE

Beethoven’s last 5 piano sonatas are one of the most essential group of pieces in classical piano literature. They clearly demonstrate the development of Beethoven’s creativity. This research takes a holistic approach in presenting the characteristics found in the last 5 piano sonatas, and analyzes their influence and impact on piano literature in later periods.
The study reveals that all characteristics originated from the conceptual framework of the “Fantasia style” which resembles the fantasia - type of compositions that focus on freedom and give importance to fantasy and emotion. The blending of sonata with the “Fantasia style” conceptual framework had influence on later composers. Thus, the “Sonata in the style of a Fantasia” or “Fantasia in the style of a Sonata” was greatly developed and became widespread.
