CREATIVE INDUSTRIAL PRODUCT DESIGN: A CASE STUDY OF CONTEMPORARY SILVER JEWELLERY FROM TUNG TAI LUE'S PATTERN IDENTITY IN CHIANG KHAM DISTRICT, PHAYAO PROVINCE

Abstract

This study employs a mix-method approach, using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Its objectives were aimed to 1) investigate the characteristics and origins of the Tung Tai Lue community in Chiang Kham District, Phayao Province, and 2) develop a jewelry collection that draws inspiration from Tung Tai Lue's cultural heritage. The subjects included five village gurus, five tung weavers, two monks, five entrepreneurs, and seven product design experts. The research instruments were an unstructured and comprehensive interview. The data were analyzed by methodically arranged to derive findings on important subjects then juxtaposed this data with documentary evidence and assessments of product models. Statistical data were provided by specialists, employing average and standard deviation to lay the foundation for future prototypes.


The results showed that 1) the identity of Tung Tai Lue was a pattern that reflected the lifestyle of the Tai Lue Chiang Kham people from the past to the present, with the belief in doing good deeds and philanthropy in hopes of using merit in the future, and 2) Tung Tai Lue signs inspired the design of silver jewelry and the three sets of plants, animals, and utensils were produced with beautiful and modern identity. They were wearable in daily life and manufacturable in industrial systems. The industrial product design process included (1) identifying needs; (2) defining target audiences; (3) creating design concepts using scamper techniques; (4) selecting concepts by evaluating them with entrepreneurs and experts; (5) testing the concept; and (6) defining product details before actual production.
