POTENTIAL DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ACADEMICS ON ORGANIC AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF LOCAL ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATIONS IN CHIANG MAI AND LAMPHON PROVINCES

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate: 1) knowledge, understanding and needs for potential development of agricultural academics on organic agricultural extension; 2) factors effecting potential development of the agricultural academics; and 3) appropriate guidelines for developing potential of the agricultural academics. Date was collected through questionnaire (70 respondents), in-depth interview (18 informants) and focus group discussion conducted with agricultural academics on organic agricultural extension under the supervision of local administrative organizations in Chiang Mai and Lamphon provinces. The questionnaire was checked by using triangular inspection and scholars. Obtained data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and content analysis.
Results of the study revealed that, as a whole, 1) the agricultural academics had a high level of knowledge and understanding about organic agriculture (78. 57%). They also needed for potential development on organic agricultural extension at a high level (x ̅=3.91). 2) Factors effecting potential development of the agricultural academic were: (1) problems and readiness of the area; (2) opportunity in the development of organic agriculture; (3) lack of potential of the agricultural academics. 3) The following were guidelines for potential development of the agricultural academics: (1) workshop on innovation /new body of knowledge which could be truly adopted; (2) development of organic agriculture knowledge based on interest; (3) establishment of agricultural academic networks; (4) clear development plan/government regulations; (5) development of local agricultural extension division; (6) increasing the number of agricultural academics; (7) having a policy on potential development of Personnel; (8) restructuring of agricultural academic relocation; (9) integration of organic agriculture; and (10) true policy advocacy on organic agriculture.
