ONLINE INSTRUCTOR COMPETENCIES AND ROLES: INSTRUCTOR PRESENCE AND LEARNER SUPPORT

Abstract
This article presents online instructor competencies for e-Learning settings in distance education. The online instructor competencies include 5 areas (11 sub-competencies and 64 indicators) as follows: (1) Pedagogical Knowledge (1.1) Planning and Teaching Preparation (13 indicators) 1.2) Designing of Instructional Methods and Strategies (7 indicators), 2) Organizing Online Learning Activities 2.1) Arrangement of Online Learning Environments (4 indicators) 2.2) Encouraging Learner Attainment (7 indicators), 3) Learner Support and Guidance 3.1) Learner Guidance and Facilitation (5 indicators) 3.2 Learner Support and Encouragement (10 indicators), 4) Assessment and Evaluation 4.1) Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness (4 indicators) 4.2) Assessment of Learner Participation (4 indicators) 4.3) Identifying evaluation process and report (4 indicators), 5) Information and Communication Knowledge and Skills 5.1) Use of Basic ICT (3 indicators) 5.2) Use of LMS and Online Tools (3 indicators). In addition, the article focuses on the instructor presence and supporting role in e-Learning settings that are different from self-paced eLearning course and traditional classroom.
