A Study of Perception Verbs in Thai Language by Chinese StudentsStudying Thai as a Foreign Language of Lampang Rajabhat University

Abstract

          Analogous words were a feature of language to show the abundant meanings. It was a thesaurus for users to select and use variously and occasionally. On the other hand, the users who were not native might encounter the difficulty to use. This research aimed at studying the usage of perception verbs in Thai language by Chinese students who studied Thai language as a foreign language. The population were 81 Chinese students studied in 3^rd and 4^th year at Lampang Rajabhat university. Tool used for collecting data were the closed test about perception verbs in Thai language with 84 items with 29 pairs of perception verbs. The result found that the usage of perception words divided into 3 types were 1) all verbs were correct usage 2) all verbs were incorrect usage 3) both correct and incorrect verb usage. Firstly, all correct verb usage was body perception verbs divided into 5 groups: hands (7-word pairs), feet (1 word pair), mouth (1 word pair), eyes (1 word pair), nose (1 word pair).  Secondly, all incorrect verb usage had 1 word pair was stab-prick. Finally, both correct and incorrect verb usage had 17 word pairs. It also found that the students used correctly more than incorrectly in 10 word pairs and used incorrectly more than correctly in 7 word pairs. This result showed that the incorrect usage of perception words in Thai language by Chinese students studying Thai as a foreign language came from the intervention and replacement of mother language of learners. However, these problems could be solved by thesaurus or an enough language experience of learners.
