Study of Applying Coffee Gronds as Raw Material for Spa Product Design

Abstract

The objective of a study of applying coffee grounds as a material in the design of spa products are  1) to study the way to use coffee grounds as a product design material, 2) to design and develop a series of household appliances, and 3) to survey user feedback on new product designs from coffee grounds.

          The tools used to collect data were one coffee grounds informant, one specialist in Eco-design, and 120 target group of people who were answering the satisfaction towards a new design survey. The data were analyzed by using mean.

            The results showed that 1) coffee grounds wastes are natural material which are powdered, solid, dark brown, oily in the seed, and scented. Applying coffee grounds as a main spa products design required other material to enhance the structural strength. And also we should focus on other factors such as molds, cleaning, waterproof, and fire (2) Designing spa collections with tray, saucer, scented candles, cream cups, and packaging can be used in real life, washable, lightweight, and movable. They were inspired by the shape of coffee beans, 3) the results from the target group survey showed 3.1) the overall opinion about the appropriateness of product use was in the high level (=4.08), 3.2) the overall opinion towards the appropriateness of the material was at the high level (=4.21), 3.3) the overall opinion about the appropriateness of design aesthetics was at a high level (= 4.19), 3.4) the overall opinion on the possibility bringing the production to commercial distribution was at the high level (=4.36), and 3.5) the overall opinion on development of style and aesthetics was also at the high level (= 4.23).
