Abstract

Introduction: Kaew Village is a tourism community in Sri Saket Province despite issues on the readiness and management. This study aims to explore the community’s issues and strategies for effective community-based tourism management by examining Objective: 1) the context of the community, 2) its tourism potential, and 3) the management approaches for enhancing community-based tourism to generate income for the local community. Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods research design. The quantitative data was collected via survey from 400 locals and the qualitative data was from semi-structured interview among 18 locals. Results: The findings revealed that the overall tourism potential and readiness of the community were at moderate level. The highest potential was identified in the area of tourism activities, particularly merit-making during important Buddhist holidays, visits to the museum—which exhibits traditional household items of the Khmer ethnic Thai people—and the Khae Village learning center for traditional Thai desserts and basketry handicrafts. The second highest was the availability of facilities at tourist sites, such as the cleanliness and adequacy of restrooms, garbage bins, and parking spaces. The third area was tourism attractions, including important Buddhist ceremonies, the cleanliness of tourist sites, and the beauty and pleasant atmosphere of the locations. One of the study’s objectives was to explore strategies for managing community-based tourism in Khae Village in order to generate income for the local community. Key strategies included fostering unity and collaboration among residents, raising awareness of tourism’s benefits, seeking government funding to support initial operations, and enhancing the village landscape to develop it into an attractive tourist destination. Conclusion: The community has strong potential in tourism activities; therefore, the government should provide budget support, improve the landscape, and enhance public relations.
