Creating a learning community and community development of Thai people abroad Case study: Thai community in Los Angeles California, United States.

Abstract

This study aims to (1) explore the context and current situation of the Thai community in Los Angeles (2) examine the historical development and transformation of the Thai community from past to present and (3) analyze the roles and operational processes of Thai community networks in the area. Employing a qualitative research methodology, this study draws on document analysis and secondary data from 20 Thai communities, supplemented by focus group discussions with 25 key informants including Buddhist monks, community leaders, and association presidents selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that: (1) the enactment of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act led to increased settlement of immigrants from various ethnic backgrounds, including Thais. Areas with a concentration of Thai residents became known as “Thai Town” (2) the development of the Thai community in Los Angeles is rooted in the collective effort to preserve and sustain Thai Town and (3) the community is structured around five core groups: business and occupational networks, alumni associations by educational institutions, residential and cultural identity groups, social activity organizations, and religious groups dedicated to promoting Buddhism. The key challenges faced by the Thai diaspora in community development include social adaptation, community cohesion in a foreign context, and strengthening internal organizational structures. The study highlights the critical roles of cultural preservation and collaborative networks in sustaining a vibrant Thai diaspora learning community through participatory learning and development processes.
