Analyzing the Portrayal of Female Characters in Disney Pixar Films and Thai Folktales : The Case Study of Brave and Kaew Na Ma

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the behavior of characters that are different in each society and culture. The study was conducted through the behavior of women in Disney Pixar's Brave cartoon and the Thai folktale Kaew Na Ma. The behavior of female characters is reflected through the actions of female characters that are published on the Disney+ Hotstar and www.youtube.com websites by transcribing the text into verbal language. The results of the analysis show that the reflection of female character behavior can be divided into 3 characteristics: women are strong and brave like men, behavior that does not conform to the ideals of people in society, and behavior that is determined by the parents. As follows: The characters want to break out of the framework of being a noble woman, such as the character of Princess Merida, who is brave, dares to think, dares to speak what she wants, and has behavior that is contrary to the old traditions set by the older generation. Meanwhile, the character Kaew Na Ma is still a female character who is suppressed in the old-fashioned framework, showing the different social conditions between Europe and Asia that are conveyed through modern media.
