An Analysis of The Value of Sekhiyavatta with Dhamma Principle to Support Bhikkhus in Thai Society

Abstract

This article aimed to study; (1) Sekhiyavatta in Buddhism, (2) the teachings supporting Sekhiyadhamma, (3) value of Sekhayavatta with supported virtues for Bhikkhus in Thai society. It was documentary research conducted by taking the data from Buddhist texts, and other related documents. The collected data was analyzed and compiled with descriptive statistics and content Analysis. The results were found that;


1. Sekhiyavatta refers to the customs with regulation for the right deeds, speech and mind, unity and faithfulness of Sangha consisting of 75 themes; 1) Sarupa group containing 26 themes dealing with proper behaviors, 2) Bhojanapatisanyutta containing 30 themes concerning to the way to receive alms-giving and eating, 3) Dhammadessanapatisanyutta section containing 16 themes dealing with Dhamma delivering, 4) Pakinnaka section containing 3 themes dealing with general behaviors.


2. The Buddha’s teaching supported Sekhiyavatta include 4 Parisuddhisila; 1) Patimokkha control, 2) Sensual organs control, 3) avoiding wrong livelihood, 4) 4 basic needs consideration; robes, food, shelters and medicine, 3 Santuttha; 1) satisfaction on whatever received, 2) satisfaction as ability, 3) satisfaction on whatever is suitable, and 5 virtues of Dhamma teacher; 1) teaching in order, 2) teaching with reason supported, 3) teaching with compassion and aiming for most benefits, 4) teaching without greed, 5) teaching without blaming one-self and others.


3. An analysis of the value of Sekhiyavatta with supported virtues for Sangha in Thai society showed that Sangha or Bhikkhus who are with good behavior and character, never break down 7 Bhikkhus’ disciplines, control five senses, having proper clothing, right livelihood, and consuming 4 basic needs etc. are faithful and holding the leader in Thai society as well as support the long life of Buddhism.
