Abstract

This research paper contains two objectives: 1) study the content and Dhamma found in Gaya Sutta, 2) analysis of Vipassana meditation practice found in Gaya Sutta by studying data from Theravada Buddhist scriptures, namely Tipitaka, commentaries, Pakornvisesa and other related scriptures, compiled, descriptive and examined by experts. From study, it was found that;

Gaya Sutta was a discourse mentioned the nature of flesh body continued by food, by food it exists, without food one cannot survive. It also contains the teaching of Five Hindrances; Sensual desire, ill-will, sloth and torpor, distraction and remorse and doubt, blocking the mind withing unwholesome, supported by rooted defilements, it was a barrier of good deeds, and the path to enlightenment, Nibbana attainment, this Nivarana was suppressed by clear comprehension or Yonisomanasikara, consideration and insight on the true nature of all which leads to 7 enlightenment factors, i.e., mindfulness, Dhamma analysis, effort, zest, tranquility, concentration and equanimity. This virtue leads to complete mental growth for final truth realization through continuously observing the true state of all phenomena as they really are.

An analysis of Vipassana meditation in Gaya Sutta showed that the practice focuses on contemplating the 5 mental hindrances or Nivarana and how to abandon it by following Yonisomanasikara which leads to the state of 7 enlightenment factors in which it causes the rise of Mahasatipatthana balance through the direct insight knowledge seeing all as arising, existing, passing away, or impermanence, suffering, and non-self. The insight knowledge penetrates the name and forms leading to enlightenment or Noble One; Sotapanna, Sakadagami, Anagamñ and Arahanta.
