A study of Vipassana Meditation Practice in Ajjhattathukka Sutta

Abstract

The objectives of this article were 1) to study the content and essence of Ajjhattadukkha Sutta, and 2) to study the development of meditation in the Ajjhattadukkha Sutta. It was documentary research done by collecting information from Theravada Buddhist scriptures and related documents, summarized, analyzed, and compiled in descriptive type. The results showed that The Vipassana meditation practice in Ajjhattadukkha Sutra can be divided into 1) contemplating on the first internal sense-organ, eye and forms, that they cannot endure in their original state, suffering, impermanence, impermanent things are suffering, whatever is suffering is non-self, whichever is non-self is not mine, not I, not our self, 2) the second inner sense-organ, the ear with sound cannot endure in their original state, suffering and so on, 3) the third inner sense-organ; the nose with smell is suffering, 4) the forth inner sense-organ, the tongue paired with taste is suffering,  5) The fifth inner sense-organ is the body, that is, the body with contact is suffering. 6) The sixth inner sense-organ is the mind paired with the Dhamma, it is suffering, whatever is suffering is non-self, whatever is non-self, is not me, is not mine, is not myself. When contact arises through these inner sense-organ; eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind, the insight knowledge that arises from Vipassana will lead to the growth of the Noble Eightfold Path, which eventually leads to the realization of Nirvana.
