The Role and Virtue of Naga in Theravada Buddhist Scriptures That Affect Thai Society

Abstract

This article aims (1) to study the serpent in Theravada Buddhist scriptures; (2) to study the role and virtue of the serpent in Theravada Buddhism; (3) to study the role and virtue of the serpent in the Buddhist scriptures that affect Thai society today. The research results showed that the serpent in the Buddhist scriptures have a duty to protect Buddhism a strong believer keep the precepts perseverance. The Naga in Theravada Buddhist scriptures, such as the Tripitaka, Atthakatha, and Deka, mentions the Naga that is related in Theravada Buddhism, such as Phaya Puridat Nagaraj. Phaya Mutchalin Nakarat and Phaya Kannakarat. The role and virtue of the serpent in Theravada Buddhism, it was found that the serpent played an important role in protecting Buddhism and practiced oneself according to the Buddhist concept, i.e. doing good and avoiding evil. Keep the precepts in order to attain purity. The role and virtue of the Naga in Theravada Buddhism towards present Thai society making it known that the Dharma of the Naga It can be applied to Thai society, be it social, political, economic, in all aspects, all of which have dharma as the basis. Therefore, the principles of the Naga can be applied to Thai society.
