Preventing and Solving Drug Problems in Nong Chok District, Bangkok Metropolitan

Abstract

The objectives of this research were 1) to evaluate the preventing and solving drug problems, 2) to analyze the problems and obstacles of preventing and solving drug problems, and 3) to offer the guidelines for preventing and solving drug problems in Nong Chok District, Bangkok Metropolitan. The research was qualitative. Key informants in this study included  the government administrators as the policy level, polices and government personnels at the operational level, community leaders in Nong Chok District and people in Nong Chok District, totaling  25 people, by a purposive selection.  The research tool was a structured interview.  Data analyzed to a summarize descriptive. The results found that

1)  The preventing and solving drug problems in Nong Chok District, Bangkok  Metropolitan  was a system for monitoring and helping those who had undergone treatment, developing a network of cooperation between various related sectors and developing a management system for preventing and solving drug problems to be ready to deal with the drug epidemic situation,

2) The problems and obstacles in preventing and solving drug problems in Nong Chok District, Bangkok Metropolitan, including insufficient personnel, materials, equipment, and budget.  Personnel lacked appropriate knowledge and skills, lacked of integration in joint operations.  Law enforcement was not strict, lacked of cooperation from various relevant sectors, family, social and economic problems cause increased drug use. Some drug addicts refused treatment and rehabilitation, and some return to using drugs again,

3) The guidelines for preventing and solving drug problems in Nong Chok District, Bangkok Metropolitan.  All sectors should be encouraged to participate. Integration of work must be clear, emphasis on methods of prevention and correction rather than suppression, using community power as an important mechanism, developed knowledge and abilities of personnel, conducted a campaign to create knowledge, created awareness and constanted awareness of the problem, including organizing, creative promotion activities to create positive energy for people and youth to stay away from drugs.
