Abstract

This article purposes to develop the storybook set with Edward de Bono’s six Thinking Hats Concept to enhance social awareness in young children. The research method is a mixed-method approach. The conceptual framework combines the principles of social and emotional learning with de Bono’s six thinking hats. The research process consists of two distinct phases. The first phase involves the development of storybooks using Edward de Bono’s six thinking hats concept includes conducting a literature review and designing the initial draft of the storybook set. The second phase focuses on the quality assessment of the storybook set, with input from key informants such as three qualified experts and five young children’s teachers from five schools. Two research instruments are utilized in this study. Firstly, an assessment tool is used to evaluate the storybook set’s effectiveness. This assessment tool encompasses four areas of evaluation: 1) Format, 2) Content, 3) The Utilization of Language, and 4) Benefits and Practical Application. Secondly, interviews are conducted with young children’s teachers to gather their insights on the implementation of the storybook set. The interview topics encompass four key areas of discussion: 1) Opinions on the storybook format, 2) Satisfaction with the application of the storybook set, 3) Observations of children’s responses, and 4) Changes in children’s social awareness behaviour after listening to the storybooks.

The research findings indicate that the storybook set effectively facilitates children’s comprehension of social awareness. The children demonstrated a rapid understanding of the content, exhibited emotional engagement throughout the storytelling process, and actively participated in responding to questions of social awareness. Subsequently, following exposure to the storybook media, the children displayed behaviours that reflected increased social awareness. These behaviours were manifested through clear verbal expressions and observable actions.
