A Study of Three Benefits Effecting Vipassana Meditation Practice

Abstract

This research paper article entitled ‘A Study of Three Benefits Effecting Vipassana Meditation Practice’ has two objectives;1) to study three benefits effecting in Theravada Buddhist scriptures and 2) to study how these three benefits effecting to Vipassanameditation practice. It was a documentary research. Its results were that the word ‘Attha’ or benefits refers to intended gains, goals, interests or well-being, which are caused by a state of free mind from all desires. The benefit was divided into 3 categories;1) Ditthadhammikattha or the present advantage 2) Samparayikattha or future benefits and 3) Paramattha or supreme benefit referring to Nirvana. These benefits are important to life because it sets the goal of everyone. Especially, Buddhism teaches to gain such benefits in both of worldly and supramundane level. In order to gain the said benefits, one must follow moral codes, meditation and wisdom which the Buddha has thought to achieve that ultimate fruit called Nibbana.


These 3 benefits that effect to meditation development in case of helping one to contemplate on name and forms as absolute truth as follows: 1) development of meditation must consist of 4 virtues; (1) Utthanasampada or persistence in the determination of mental objects,  (2)  Arakkhasampada or endowing with watchfulness of 6 sensual organs, (3) Kalyanamittata or associating and listening to wises’ teaching,  (4) Samajivita or balanced living with mindfulness and constantly practicing for attaining a Noble One being in the present life, 2) insight development for future benefits consist of 4 virtues, i.e. confidence, moral acts, generosity, and wisdom. These virtues lead one to achieve Noble One being resulting pure happiness in here and next life, 3) insight meditation developing helps to attain the supreme benefits, that is to say, highest achievement or Nibbana in both of Nibbana with remaining defilement and Nibbana without any remaining.
