Abstract
The objectives of the study were to compare the internet access and utilization of the Muslim woman living in the municipality and non-municipality areas of Mueang Pattani district, Pattani province. This study was conducted by mixed-method research approach which combined quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Questionnaires were employed to collect information from 445 Muslim women in municipality area and 427 Muslim women in non-municipality area. Also, a focus group interview was conducted for gathering in-depth information from 10 selected Muslim women living in the areas.
The results showed that Muslim women living in the municipality area had more advantages on internet access than Muslim women living in the non-municipality area, including internet knowledges, economic expense, and social support.
This study also found that Muslim woman has created unique methods for accessing and utilizing the internet for their communication purposes. The unique method of internet access was to proceed with the following steps: 1) to have internet necessity, 2) to have internet knowledge, 3) to have internet usage time, 4) to have self-control on internet usage, and 5) to have internet availability. It was revealed that the complete implementation of the method must be proceeded in this order to gain full social support.
In addition, the study also found that Muslim women had brought some Islamic teachings to build unique strategies for utilizing the internet including offensive and defensive strategies. The offensive strategy was to employ Islamic knowledge on “roles of Muslim women” for accepting some aspects of the internet, to employ Islamic knowledge on “rights of Muslim women” for reconstructing some aspects of the internet, and to employ Islamic knowledge on “protection of Muslim women” for rejecting some aspects of the internet. It was found that the objective of employing strategies was to empower the Muslim women on the issue of the internet utilization.
