Abstract

This research project, titled “S.E.A. Write sideways, the ‘Happiness of Krati’: informal education management in theater arts for developing underprivileged children and youth in Chachoengsao Province” is a qualitative research study which aimed 1) to provide informal education in theatre arts to underprivileged children and youth in Chachoengsao Province, 2) to develop these young people’s communication and expression skills by using S.E.A. Write literature, and 3) to promote informal learning through theatre arts for the development process. Experimental development and informal education management were used as the research method. Expert educators in the area of theatre arts, a S.E.A. Write Award book, namely Happiness of Krati, and theatre media for development were used. The analysis was conducted on the data obtained from questionnaires, development record forms, learners’ attitudes towards the education management process, content and pattern forms, participant observation and focus-group discussion.

            The results of the project revealed that, firstly, learners gained some knowledge, skills and positive attitudes towards reason and artistic reading, speaking, writing, and listening. They learned each other’s differences and developed connection among thoughts, beliefs, emotions and feelings through the activities provided. Secondly, the educators developed both of their academic and professional knowledge of informal education, improved their activity management process, and used theatre art for youth development. Thirdly, the content of the book, Happiness of Krati, fit well with this kind of learning activity and it is appropriate for learners aged between 6-12 years. Finally, combining reading of books suitable for learners’ age ranges with theatre activity contributed integrated learning.
