Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the use of sound to create fear in Thai ghost films by using qualitative research methodology and mixed methods. This research studied the uses of sound in nine scenes from seven Thai ghost films, using textual analysis, focus group discussion with Thai ghost film lovers. And interview with sound design specialists. Five categories of concepts and theories were used, namely: 1) concept about horror films, 2) concept about the sound, 3) social construction of reality, 4) semiology, and 5) concepts about psychological fear.

            The study revealed five key findings. 1) The use of surround sound system could create greater fear for the audience than mono or stereo. 2) The use of surround sound system could evoke the image in a first-person view. 3) The use of surround sound system could enable the audience to become emotionally engaged with the location shown in the scene. 4) The use of sudden loud sound could make the audiences startled, tremble, and frightened, but this method needs the audience to be distracted in order to minimize the precaution that they have created against fear. 5) The distance between the ghost and the first-person perspective was related to the loudness of sound used in sudden sound techniques.
