A Study of the Guidelines for Designing the Landscape of Namtok Namkhem in Trang Province for Tourism by Public Participation

Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate potential and outstanding identity regarding physical relationships of natural environment and local beliefs. The study was conducted by the participatory action method of local civil society. The research methodology was completed with community representatives, community tourism entrepreneurs, community leaders, government office representatives and a workshop meeting to develop the landscape design of community tourism. The research results showed that Namtok Namkhem is an outstanding identity of natural environment and has relationships with the local beliefs. The appropriate landscape design was considered that it was needed to have conformity to the environment and the identity as a part of landscape elements. The indication found in this research was that the community could participate only in discussions whereas the government sector still had a role of authorization in development plans. The discovery of landscape design by participation process of knowledge exchange, analysis, and mutual problem-solving between the researchers and community positively influenced on the movement to apply this landscape design to concretely develop their sustainable tourist attractions.
