A Linguistic Study on the Naming Strategies of Thai TV Series Titles into Chinese

Abstract

This qualitative research examined the Chinese naming strategies employed for 2,158 Thai TV series This qualitative research investigated the Chinese naming strategies applied to 2,158 Thai TV series available on taijuwang websites between 2003 and 2022. The study's findings revealed the following: 1) Phonologically, four-syllable words were predominant, with an emphasis on prosodic features. 2) Lexically, high-frequency words were frequently utilized. 3) Grammatically, modifier-core structure phrases and declarative sentences were prevalent. 4) Rhetorically, harmonic, quotation, parody, and superimposed words were commonly employed. 5) Culturally, the Chinese titles of Thai dramas reflected a blend of Thai, Chinese, and Western cultural elements. 6) Linguistically, issues pertaining to the use of vulgar language and ambiguous meanings were identified. These research outcomes provide valuable insights for guiding the naming of Thai TV series in Chinese and contribute to the promotion of Thailand's cultural soft power.
