The Effect of Job Characteristics and Achievement Motivation on Online Learning Effectiveness in Hotel Business

Abstract
The purposes of this research were 1) to study the level of and the relationship between job characteristics and achievement motivation and online learning effectiveness in hotel business, and 2) to examine the effects of job characteristics and achievement motivation on online learning effectiveness in the hotel business. This quantitative study gathered data from 330 employees of a large 5-star hotel in Thailand. The statistics used for data analysis were percentage, mean, standard deviation, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The results from this study showed that 1) the employees had an opinion towards job characteristics, achievement motivation, and online learning effectiveness at a high level. In addition, job characteristics were moderately and positively correlated with online learning effectiveness at a statistical significance level of .01 (r = 0.44) while achievement motivation was relatively low but positively correlated with online learning effectiveness at the statistical significance level of .01 (r = 0.38), and 2) job characteristics, particularly a skill variety, autonomy, and feedback, had a positive and significant impact on online learning effectiveness; in addition, achievement motivation also had a positive and significant impact on learning effectiveness, particularly the need for achievement and the need for power components. However, the need for an affiliation component had a negative and significant impact on learning effectiveness.
