Translation Strategies for Korean Dramas Titles on the Netflix Website

Abstract

This article aimed to analyze translation strategies of Korean drama titles on the Netflix website. The translation theory by Newmark was adopted to analyze the data collected from 261 Korean drama cover photos on the Netflix website from November 28 to December 31, 2000. The results indicated that there were 8 translation strategies: 1) Literal translation, 2) Faithful translation, 3) Semantic translation, 4) Communicative translation, 5) Free translation, 6) Adaptation, 7) Using more than one strategy, and 8) No translation. No transliteration   can be classified into 2 groups: transliteration with Thai language and transliteration with other languages, not Thai. The most popular strategy is adaptation at 49.81%; on the other hand, the least popular strategy is literal translation at 0.77%
