The Development of Trombone Instructional Package: a Basic Performance Technique

Abstract
This research aimed to (1) develop trombone instructional package: a basic performance technique by improving sound quality, lip slur, scale and performing song, and (2) test the effectively of the instructional package. The data were collected from four students playing trombone and baritone instrument who used this instruction package over a period of 12 weeks (1hour per week). Each week (a pretest and posttest were given.) Students were assigned to record their performance each week followed by an informal interview.
An exercise to improve trombone performance technique had content that was divided into 12 hours. The topics related to the trombone in four primary areas namely improving sound quality, lip slur, scale and short song performance.
In practical tests, it was found that the scores of development of trombone performance were better in every topic. The students had improved most on sound quality, followed by scale playing skills, lip slur ranking third, and song performance ranking fourth.
From collecting the students’ opinion on using the instruction package it was found that students could better understand the principles of using trombone and the practice content as it was not too complicated or difficult.
The result of the effectively test of teaching practice for beginners that had been improved showed that the sample group had better skills in playing trombone and the content in the instruction package is appropriate to student’s level.
