บทความนี้ต้องการอธิบายข้อจำกัดของพันธมิตรทางทหารของสหรัฐอเมริกาในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ในสมัยประธานาธิบดีบารัก โอบามา ภายใต้บริบทของการผงาดขึ้นของจีน แม้ในปัจจุบันจะปรากฏให้เห็นชุดคำอธิบายหลักที่ว่า การขับเคี่ยวแข่งขันระหว่างสหรัฐอเมริกาและจีนส่งผลให้รัฐในภูมิภาคต้องเลือกว่าจะอยู่ข้างสหรัฐฯหรือจีน อย่างไรก็ดี บทความนี้ต้องการโต้แย้งคำอธิบายดังกล่าว โดยชี้ว่าแม้สหรัฐฯ ในสมัยรัฐบาลโอบามาจะพยายามสร้างเครือข่ายพันธมิตรเพื่อถ่วงดุลและสกัดกั้นอิทธิพลของจีน แต่ความพยายามดังกล่าวก็กลับไม่ได้รับแรงสนับสนุนจากรัฐในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้อย่างมากเพียงพอ เพราะบรรดารัฐในภูมิภาคต่างมีผลประโยชน์และความต้องการที่แตกต่างกัน ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น แม้บางรัฐจะต้องเผชิญหน้ากับท่าทีอันเป็นภัยคุกคามจากจีนจากกรณีพิพาททะเลจีนใต้ แต่รัฐเหล่านี้ต่างก็ยังเล็งเห็นถึงผลประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจและความมั่นคงจากการรักษาความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีกับทั้งจีนและสหรัฐฯ มากกว่าการเลือกข้าง ซึ่งเป็นทางเลือกที่มีความเสี่ยงสูงยิ่ง
