เมื่อ Donald Trump ได้รับชัยชนะในการเลือกตั้งประธานาธิบดี ปี ค.ศ. 2016 หลายฝ่ายคาดการณ์กันว่า ประธานาธิบดี Trump จะเปลี่ยนทิศทางของนโยบายต่างประเทศอเมริกา จากหน้ามือเป็นหลังมือ ซึ่งย่อมส่งผลกระทบอย่างกว้างขวางต่อการเมืองโลก รวมถึง เสถียรภาพของเอเชียตะวันออก ที่เป็นพื้นที่ยุทธศาสตร์ อย่างไรก็ดี ห้วงเวลา 1 ปีแรกของรัฐบาล Trump กลับชี้ว่า ภาพรวมของการปฏิบัตินโยบายมิได้ต่างจากเดิมมากนัก หากแต่ค่อนข้างต่อเนื่องกับแนวนโยบายของรัฐบาลก่อนหน้า โดยเฉพาะ ประเด็นที่มีผลประโยชน์แห่งชาติของสหรัฐฯ เป็นเดิมพัน แม้ว่าประเด็นที่เป็นแคมเปญหาเสียงของเขาจะเปลี่ยนแปลง ตามสัญญาที่ให้ไว้กับฐานเสียงก็ตาม
