บทความนี้ศึกษาความเป็นมาของระบบการคัดเลือกบุคคลเข้าศึกษาในมหาวิทยาลัยของประเทศไทยตั้งแต่อดีตจนถึงปัจจุบัน อธิบายและวิเคราะห์ระบบการคัดเลือกบุคคลเข้าศึกษาในสถาบันอุดมศึกษารูปแบบใหม่ ซึ่งถูกนำมาใช้ในปี พ.ศ. 2561 ที่เรียกกันโดยทั่วไปว่า ระบบ TCAS พร้อมทั้งสำรวจข้อค้นพบที่สำคัญในทฤษฎีการจับคู่ว่าด้วยปัญหาการสมัครเรียน ในการนี้พบว่า ปัญหาหลักหลายประการที่เกิดขึ้นในระบบ TCAS นั้น เป็นอาการของกลไกการจับคู่ที่ไม่เสถียรและมีความอ่อนไหวต่อการใช้กลยุทธ์ต่าง ๆ ของผู้สมัคร บทความนี้จึงเสนอให้นำกลไกการจับคู่ด้วยขั้นตอนวิธีการเลื่อนการตอบรับ (Deferred Acceptance Algorithm) ของ Gale-Shapley ซึ่งให้ผลลัพธ์ที่ดีที่สุดสำหรับนักศึกษามาใช้ เพื่อป้องกันความไม่เสถียรที่อาจเกิดขึ้น และชักนำให้ผู้สมัครทุกคนมีการเปิดเผยอันดับความพึงพอใจที่แท้จริงของตน
