A Study of the Southeast Asian Languages in Si Yi Guan in Ming Dynasty from the Perspective of Chaogong Trade

Abstract

Si Yi Guan, as a foreign affairs institution of the Ming Dynasty in China, not only provided language services for the tribute trade between the Ming Dynasty and ancient Southeast Asian countries, but also served as an educational institution that trained many foreign language talents. Therefore, this article is to further expands the study of the development of Southeast Asian translation in the Ming Dynasty's Si Yi Guan through the collation of historical literature and writings. The study found that the Ming Dynasty's educational policies of foreign languages, recruitment methods of students, and teaching management in the development of Southeast Asian translation of language in Si Yi Guan are worth learning from for contemporary foreign language education. Additionally, it can provide some references for the spread of Chinese as a foreign language in Southeast Asian countries.
